The story
About this watch
The early 1980s saw SEIKO turn its quartz expertise toward the dress watch, producing slim, quietly formal pieces held to the same standards as its sports models. This example is distinguished by a cushion-shaped gold-tone case paired with a deep black dial, a combination that reads far more formal than its modest dimensions suggest.

The case measures 27.5mm across excluding the crown and 35mm from lug to lug, a compact footprint that sits close to the wrist. Faceted flanks and a chamfered bezel catch the light along the edges, while the brushed stainless steel back carries the SEIKO markings and reference. Nothing is added beyond what the shape itself provides, which allows the dial to take center stage.

The dial is black and matte, its depth broken only by applied gold baton markers at each hour. Slim gold hands sweep across the surface uninterrupted, with no date aperture and no text beyond the SEIKO and QUARTZ signatures. The crystal shows light scratches consistent with four decades of wear, and the markers still lift clearly from the dark ground under any angle of light.

At its heart is SEIKO's Caliber 7431, an analog quartz movement of two jewels oscillating at 32,768 Hz and rated to within fifteen seconds a month, with a battery-end indicator built in. It is a movement chosen for accuracy rather than display, and it asks nothing of its wearer beyond an occasional cell.

Completing the watch is a black leather strap, carefully matched to complement the case and its restrained gold tone. Mounted on 17.5mm lugs, it fits wrists up to 17.5cm.
Understated, precise, and unmistakably vintage, this SEIKO captures the quiet confidence of Japanese dress watchmaking in the mid-1980s.
