OMEGA "Antique Gold Tropical Dial" 1950s

Omega had been building self-winding watches since 1943, and by the 1950s the automatic had become the core of the catalogue rather than a novelty. This example is distinguished by a two-tier dial whose raised outer ring has aged into a deep antique gold while the center has held its pale cream, a combination no two examples share in quite the same way.

The gold plated case measures 32mm across excluding the crown and 39mm from lug to lug, with curved lugs and a plain snap-on back. A domed crystal sits above a slim stepped bezel, and the crown is signed with the Omega symbol. Without unnecessary ornamentation, the case allows the dial to take center stage.

The dial carries the character of the piece. Decades of light have drawn the raised outer chapter ring toward a warm bronze gold, heaviest between one and five o'clock, and left the inner surface a finely speckled ivory. Applied faceted dart markers, doubled at twelve, sit above it, with gilt dauphine hands and a slim central seconds hand reading against the printed minute track.

At its heart beats an automatic movement, wound by the motion of the wearer and driving the seconds hand from the center. The self-winding calibres Omega built through this decade are what established the brand's reputation for running quietly and without fuss.

Completing the watch is a brown crocodile leather strap, carefully matched to complement the warm tone of the dial and preserve its classic aesthetic. It fits wrists up to 19cm and sits on 18mm lugs, so it can be changed to suit.
