OMEGA Constellation "Golden Nebula" Patina Dial 1961

Introduced in 1952, the Constellation became OMEGA's flagship chronometer line, reserved for movements certified to the highest standards of precision. Reference 14381 belongs to the collection's celebrated early period, when the pie-pan dial and applied markers defined the house's idea of formal watchmaking. This 1961 example is distinguished by a dial that time has rewritten entirely.

The stainless steel case measures 33.5mm excluding the crown and 43mm from lug to lug, with gently downturned lugs and a slim polished bezel that frames the dial closely. Its proportions belong to a period when a dress watch was expected to sit quietly beneath a cuff. The screw-down caseback carries the gold Constellation observatory medallion and its eight stars.

The dial began life silvered and has since developed an extraordinary patina, amber and ochre clouding radiating outward from the centre in a pattern no two examples share. Applied faceted baton markers and the doubled index at twelve stand bright against it, while the printed OMEGA AUTOMATIC CHRONOMETER text and the Constellation script above the star remain legible throughout. Under direct light the surface shifts between honey and deep bronze.

At its heart beats the automatic Caliber 551, a 24-jewel chronometer movement running at 19,800 vibrations per hour with a fifty-hour reserve, and among the most highly regarded automatics OMEGA produced. It is currently running to within roughly nine seconds a day.

Completing the watch is OMEGA's own stainless steel bracelet with a signed folding clasp, its rounded links echoing the softened edges of the case and tapering to an 18mm lug width. It fits wrists up to 17cm.
