Produced between 1960 and 1967, the Seikomatic was Seiko's thin, high-grade automatic line, and the foundation on which the brand built its later Matic series and its self-winding Grand Seiko calibres. This example is distinguished by a silver dial whose sunburst centre is encircled by a softer outer ring, giving the face a quiet halo as the light moves across it.

The gold-plated case measures 36.5mm excluding the crown and 43.5mm from lug to lug, with a polished bezel and slim lugs that taper gently toward the strap. Its surfaces are left plain, without unnecessary ornamentation, allowing the dial to take center stage. The caseback is signed Seikomatic and stamped 15031D.

Applied faceted batons mark each hour, tripled at twelve, beneath the early Seiko logo and the Seikomatic script. DIASHOCK 30 JEWELS sits above the Diashock star at six. Gold dauphine hands and a fine sweep seconds follow the same restraint. Light age spotting is visible across the surface, consistent with six decades.

At its heart beats the automatic Caliber 603, with 30 jewels beating at 18,000 vibrations per hour. Its Magic Lever winding system, built around miniature ruby ball bearings, was Seiko's answer to the problem of winding reliably from small movements of the wrist, and it carried through into the brand's later automatics.

Completing the watch is a black leather strap, carefully matched to the warmth of the gold-tone case. It is fitted to the 19mm lug width and adjustable to a wrist of up to 19cm.

Elegant, understated, and unmistakably vintage, this Seikomatic captures the ambition of Japanese watchmaking at the opening of the 1960s.
