OMEGA Seamaster Golden Waffle Dial 1950s

Introduced in 1948 to mark Omega's centenary, the Seamaster was conceived not as a diving instrument but as a watch for town, sea and country. Its waterproof case, sealed with a gasket design borrowed from submarine engineering, made it the most versatile watch in the catalogue. This example is distinguished by a waffle dial, a finely worked texture Omega reserved for its more considered pieces.

The gold-capped case measures 34mm across excluding the crown and 41mm from lug to lug, with slim tapered lugs and a stainless steel snap-back engraved SEAMASTER WATERPROOF. Wear has softened the edges, and the back carries the marks of decades on the wrist. Without unnecessary ornamentation, the case allows the dial to take center stage.

The dial is worked in a fine waffle texture that shifts between warm gold at the perimeter and pale silver toward the center as the light moves across it. Applied faceted baton markers, doubled at twelve, sit above it. Gilt dauphine hands and a slim central seconds hand keep the reading clear against the surface.

At its heart beats an automatic movement, wound by the motion of the wearer and driving the seconds hand from the center. The self-winding calibres of this period are what established the Seamaster's reputation for running quietly and without fuss. It is a mechanism built to be used rather than admired.

Completing the watch is a black alligator strap, carefully matched to complement the gold-capped case and preserve its classic aesthetic. It fits wrists up to 18cm and sits on 18mm lugs, so it can be changed to suit. A gold-tone pin buckle closes it.
