OMEGA Seamaster "Golden Ocean" Dial 1960s

Introduced in 1948 to mark Omega's centenary, the Seamaster was conceived not as a diving instrument but as a watch for town, sea and country. By the 1960s the line had settled into its most confident form: a slim case, a date at three, and a self-winding movement that asked nothing of its owner. This example is distinguished by a dial that six decades have turned into a landscape of deep gold and amber.

The gold-plated case measures 33mm across excluding the crown and 42mm from lug to lug, its polished bezel and slim profile giving the watch a presence larger than those dimensions suggest. A stainless steel back seals the watch, its centre carrying the embossed Seamaster seahorse that has marked the line from the beginning. Traces of use have collected across the plating and the back over the years. Without unnecessary ornamentation, the case allows the dial to take center stage.

The dial has aged well beyond its original tone, deepening into a rich gold that darkens toward the edges and breaks into pale mottling across the lower half. This is honest age rather than damage, and no two dials arrive at the same result. Applied faceted baton markers, doubled at twelve, sit above the surface, with a framed date window at three and the Seamaster script in cursive above six. The baton hands have taken on an oxidation of their own, matching the warmth around them.

At its heart beats an automatic movement, wound by the motion of the wearer and carrying the date at three. The self-winding calibres Omega built through the 1960s are what established the Seamaster's reputation for running quietly and without fuss. It is a mechanism made to be used rather than admired.

Completing the watch is a black leather strap, carefully matched to draw out the darker tones of the dial. It fits wrists up to 19cm and sits on 18mm lugs, so it can be changed to suit.
