OMEGA "Japan Dial" Champagne Patina 1960s

OMEGA's dress watches have long been admired for saying only what needs to be said, and few examples say less than this one. The dial carries no line name — no Seamaster, no De Ville — only the applied symbol and the word AUTOMATIC, the configuration known as a Japan dial. This example is distinguished by a champagne surface that has aged into a soft, freckled patina.

The case measures 34mm excluding the crown and 40mm from lug to lug, a gold-plated form closed by a stainless steel back. Slim flanks run uninterrupted into short, straight lugs, and the bezel is little more than a raised edge holding the crystal. Without ornament of any kind, the case gives almost its entire face to the dial.

A fine vertical brushing runs across the dial, reading champagne in daylight and warming toward bronze in shadow. Applied baton markers and slim faceted hands sit against it, with a framed date window at three keeping the only complication contained. Decades have left a light scatter of spotting across the surface, the kind of aging that gives a champagne dial its depth.

An automatic movement drives the watch, wound by the ordinary motion of the wrist and asking for no daily attention. The crown is signed with the Omega symbol, and the steel case back carries the light marks of a watch that was worn rather than stored.

Completing the watch is a black crocodile leather strap, carefully matched to set the gold-tone case against something darker and quieter. It is not original to the watch, though the gold-tone pin buckle is signed by Omega, and the 18mm lug width leaves the strap simple to change.

Elegant, purposeful, and unmistakably vintage, this Omega distils the dress watch to a symbol, a pair of hands, and a dial worth looking at.
