A patina dial is a dial whose original colour has changed with time: light, humidity and the materials of the dial itself slowly shift the surface. No two age the same way, which is exactly why collectors look for them. This guide groups the changes we see most often in the vintage Rolex and Omega that pass through our store, by colour and by texture.
The warm palette
Ochre, honey and copper are the most familiar patina tones. The Omega Seamaster at left has turned a deep golden earth; the Rolex Air-King Precision at right has faded to a soft sunset; the Rolex Cellini in the centre has become a burnt orange. Each is a warm tone, but each sits on a different surface: matte, sunburst and textured.
The cool palette: lavender and grey
Colour shifts are not always warm. The two Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date examples here have moved toward lavender and purple-grey. Soft shifts like these can transform a familiar watch. Even within one family, with the same case and the same dial design, no two surfaces age alike.
An unexpected colour: olive green
This Rolex Datejust ref. 16030 from 1986 began its life with a blue dial. Today it carries muted olive tones across the whole surface. The change is even and complete, and the watch reads as a green Datejust rather than a faded blue one.
Into the blue
The Rolex Cellini ref. 4016 from 1976 shows a different expression of patina. Teal and grey are broken up by scattered patches of colour across the dial. Framed by the ribbed gold case, the surface looks less like a faded dial and more like a small painting.
Beyond colour: texture and depth
Patina changes more than colour. The three Rolex dials here, which we call obsidian, stardust and mosaic, show fine grain, scattered marks and mottled tones. Under the loupe the surface has depth, and the way it catches light changes with the angle of the wrist.
A few distinctive faces
Some dials earn a name of their own. "Ancient relic" is a Rolex Oyster Perpetual whose surface has crazed into a fine web. "Black gilt" is an Omega automatic with gold print on a darkened dial. "Ghost" is a Rolex Datejust in yellow gold whose black dial has softened toward grey. "Midnight" is a Rolex Oysterdate Precision with a deep, mottled black surface. Each has individual character, shaped by time.
