A cross-lined guilloché pattern defines the dial. Contrasting surfaces intersect, concentrating their visual impact within the central cross structure. Executed entirely by hand, this guilloché work represents a level of craftsmanship rarely preserved in such clarity.
The use of 3, 6, and 9 numerals introduces a deliberate visual message. Echoing the identity of the Explorer, these markers are fused with pre-1960 wedge-shaped indices. This combination creates a distinct design language, setting the piece apart and completing its narrative.
Crafted in solid 9k champagne gold, the case presents a softer, understated tone—subtle yet unmistakably precious.
Within the Precision line—primarily known for stainless steel references—the use of solid gold was not common practice. Only select pieces, often tied to specific circumstances, were executed in precious metal. This watch belongs to that category.
Imported directly without intermediary agents, it bears the Glasgow import mark, along with a 1959 import code. The serial number engraved at the center of the caseback further indicates a specially commissioned piece.
Each of these elements contributes to its clearly defined exclusivity.
The Caliber 700 series, developed from a 10½ ligne base, featured adjustment across seven positions, establishing a strong foundation for precision-focused models. This led to references such as 2780, 2280, and the 3000 series, including Army, Viceroy, Speedking, Royal, Lipton, and Centergraph.
In the 1940s, the range expanded into the 4000 series—4134, 4220, 4298, 4299, 4332, 4514, 4542, 4561, 4669—followed by the 5000 and 6000/8000 series, including 5025, 6220, 6022, and 6023. Through these developments, a distinct “Precision style” was established within Oyster models.
By 1953, the introduction of the 1200 series calibers (1200, 1210, 1215, 1220), offering approximately 58 hours of power reserve, further expanded this concept.
Subsequent references included 6422, 6423, the larger 36mm 6424, the engine-turned bezel 6425, as well as 6426, 6427, the military-associated Command 6429, the Speedking-related 6480, and later developments such as 6430 and 6431 with Caliber 1225, alongside 6526.
While not exhaustive, this lineage demonstrates how the Oyster Precision line evolved as a distinct identity, separate from the Perpetual series.
Within this lineage, Ref. 6422 stands out for its simplicity and its applied Roman-style hour markers.
The present example is exceptionally rare. Solid gold versions of the 6422 are virtually unknown in today’s market, with little to no recorded availability globally.
A piece that exists beyond standard circulation—defined not by rarity alone, but by absence itself.
