ROLEX Super Oyster Perpetual "Ancient Relic" Patina Dial 1952

The Oyster Perpetual Ref. 6084 was made by Rolex in the early 1950s. It combines the waterproof Oyster case with the Perpetual self-winding rotor, which together made up the standard Rolex wristwatch of the period. This one carries the Super Oyster crown, a sealing system Rolex fitted for only a few years around 1950, and collectors know the combination as the Super Oyster Perpetual. This example was made in 1952. The stainless steel case measures 36mm across, excluding the crown, and 40mm from lug to lug.

Rolex's early automatic watches are known as Bubblebacks. The winding rotor made the movement thick, so the caseback had to be domed to cover it. By the time Ref. 6084 appeared the movement had become flatter, and the caseback is less pronounced than on the 1930s and 1940s models. Collectors call this generation the semi-bubbleback. The caseback is finished with a fine coin edge and the lugs are drilled. The crown is signed Rolex Super Oyster. Rather than threading down onto the case tube like the screw-down crowns Rolex used before and after it, it seals with a gasket and is simply pushed home, and it is this short-lived crown that gives the reference its Super Oyster name. Inside is the automatic Caliber 645, a 17-jewel movement running at 18,000 vibrations per hour and certified as a chronometer.

The dial was originally silvered. Over seventy years it has changed into a mottled surface of cream, grey and warm ochre, with a texture closer to weathered stone than to lacquer. This is why we call it the Ancient Relic dial. The applied gold arrowhead and dart markers stand clear of the aged surface, and the OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED CHRONOMETER line below the center is still fully legible. We inspected the reverse of the dial and found no signs of refinishing or alteration.

The watch was fully serviced on 4 September 2026 and now runs at about -5 seconds a day. The case shows traces of use and the overall condition is good. The strap is a brown leather strap chosen to match the warmth of the dial. It is not original to the watch and fits a wrist of up to 18cm. The lug width is 19mm, so other straps can be fitted.
