Produced in the 1960s, the Datejust Ref. 1601 established the template that would define the model for the following two decades: a 36mm Oyster case, a fluted bezel, and a chronometer-certified automatic movement. This example is distinguished by a dial that only time could have made.
The stainless steel Oyster case measures 36mm across and 44mm from lug to lug, topped by a finely cut fluted bezel. A light polish in its past has not dulled the case lines, and the absence of any further ornamentation allows the dial to take center stage.
Originally finished in silver sunburst, the surface has aged over more than five decades into a deep charcoal grey with an even, stone-like grain — a patina that earns the name "Meteoric Stardust". Unlike many tropical or spider dials, where legibility is the first casualty, the printing here remains sharp and the applied baton markers untouched. Under changing light the surface reveals a depth closer to natural dark grey meteorite than to paint.
At its heart beats the automatic Caliber 1565, running at 18,000 vibrations per hour on 26 jewels — the chronometer-certified movement behind the "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified" line on the dial. Fully serviced in September 2026, it is now running to approximately +13 seconds a day.
Completing the watch is the original Rolex Jubilee bracelet, whose five-link construction softens the case and remains remarkably free of stretch. The 19mm lug width and a fitted length of up to 17cm keep the proportions faithful to the period.
Elegant, restrained, and unmistakably vintage, this Datejust carries the quiet individuality that only decades can give a dial.
