GRAND SEIKO Hi-Beat "45GS" Silver Dial 1968

Introduced in 1968, the 45GS is where Grand Seiko brought the technology of the European observatory trials into a watch that could be bought over a counter. It was the first Grand Seiko built around a manually wound movement beating at 36,000 vibrations per hour, and it carried the case language established a year earlier by the 44GS. This example is a stainless steel 4520-8000, serialled to May 1968, the year the model was introduced.

The case measures 36mm across excluding the crown and 40mm from lug to lug, and it is Taro Tanaka's Grammar of Design in its purest form: flat surfaces meeting at sharp unbroken ridges, wide mirror-polished flanks, and a bezel with no curvature to soften it. Every plane is worked to be free of distortion, which is the whole intention — the case returns light in clean sheets rather than scattering it. The crown is signed GS.

The dial is silver, finished in a fine matte texture that holds light without glare and allows the applied work to take center stage. Faceted baton markers and broad faceted hands are cut with the same flat-and-bevel logic as the case, and the applied SEIKO logo sits alone at twelve. At six, GS / HI-BEAT / 36000 is printed above the small lightning-bolt mark of the Daini Seikosha works, the factory where the watch was built. Light spotting across the surface is consistent with the age of the piece.

At its heart beats the manually wound Caliber 4520, Grand Seiko's first hand-wound movement to run at 36,000 vibrations per hour, built at Daini Seikosha and fitted with 25 jewels. The higher frequency leaves the balance less troubled by shocks and by changes of position, and on the timing machine the watch is now running to within a couple of seconds a day. The daily ritual of winding reinforces the connection between the wearer and the mechanism within.

Completing the watch is a vintage steel bracelet, not original to this reference but carefully matched to the polished surfaces of the case and to the period in which it was made. It fits a wrist of up to 17cm, and the 18mm attachment leaves the option of a different strap open.

Precise, severe, and unmistakably of its moment, the 4520-8000 catches Grand Seiko at the point where its design and its engineering finally arrived in the same place.

HISTORY
Through the 1960s Seiko entered the observatory chronometer competitions in Europe in order to measure itself against the Swiss. At Neuchâtel in 1967 Daini Seikosha took second place in the company series prize, and at Geneva in 1968 Seiko movements occupied fourth through tenth place in the wristwatch section, the highest ranking achieved by a mechanical wristwatch in that competition. The high-frequency work behind those results was not left in the laboratory; the 45GS of 1968 is where it reached the catalogue.

The 44GS of 1967 had established the Grand Seiko Style, the case grammar of flat surfaces, sharp ridges and distortion-free polishing that the brand follows to this day. The 45GS kept that case and replaced what sat inside it with the ten-beat Caliber 4520. Selected movements of the 45 series were afterwards submitted to Neuchâtel for chronometer certification and sold cased as certified examples, and in 1969 the line reached its furthest point in the 45GS V.F.A., adjusted to a monthly rate of within one minute. Grand Seiko returned to the model in 2024 with a pair of limited re-creations and reproduced the Daini Seikosha mark on their dials, in tribute to where the original was born.
