The black gloss dial, once likely defined by a deep ink-black tone and rich lustre, has undergone a complex transformation over the decades. Its lettering and minute markings have softened and faded, appearing as though veiled beneath countless layers of translucent film.

Although it has gradually lost some of its practical legibility, the expression created by this fading is entirely unique—one that cannot be found on any other example.

The word “DATEJUST” remains only faintly visible, seemingly emerging from deep within the dial, while the raised “ROLEX” lettering and coronet quietly reveal the technical refinement and aesthetic sensibility that defined Rolex during this period.

This is not merely the result of age.

It is a singular “Ghost Dial,” possessing a character that only a watch surviving the passage of many decades could ever attain.

The present watch is a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust Ref. 6605, produced during the latter half of the 1950s.

The history of the Datejust began in 1945 with the early models represented by the Ref. 4467, introduced to commemorate Rolex’s 40th anniversary.

The waterproof Oyster case, the rotor-driven Perpetual automatic winding system, and the date mechanism displaying the calendar through an aperture on the dial.

These technologies, refined by Rolex over many years, were united within a single wristwatch in the Datejust, which would evolve into one of the brand’s defining practical timepieces.

During this period, founder Hans Wilsdorf suffered the successive loss of his beloved wife, Florence Frances May Crotty, and his longtime friend and business ally, Jean Aegler, whose support had been instrumental in the development of Rolex.

The true depth of Wilsdorf’s state of mind cannot be known.

Yet even during an era marked by profound personal loss, Rolex never ceased pursuing innovation. The company continued to bring the Oyster, the Perpetual, and the Datejust toward completion, a fact that speaks unmistakably of Hans Wilsdorf’s unwavering determination.

At the heart of the present watch is the self-winding Caliber 1065.

During the 1950s, Rolex’s automatic winding systems underwent a major evolution. Caliber 1030 introduced bidirectional winding in place of the earlier unidirectional system, and its technology provided the foundation for the Day-Date Caliber 1055 and subsequently the Datejust Caliber 1065.

Introduced around 1955, Caliber 1065 occupies an extremely important position in the history of the Datejust.

Its defining feature was the realization of an instantaneous calendar mechanism, allowing the date to advance rapidly around midnight.

A mechanism completing one revolution every 24 hours was linked to the calendar-driving wheel. At the moment of the date change, stored energy was released, securely advancing the date disc to the following day.

Through this mechanism, the instantaneous date change pursued by Rolex since the introduction of the Datejust in 1945 reached a true stage of maturity in Caliber 1065.

The movement also received substantial improvements in serviceability and durability. By designing certain components of the automatic winding system as independent assemblies, Rolex simplified disassembly and reassembly while improving overall maintenance efficiency.

Caliber 1065 represented a major departure from previous design principles and emerged as a new generation of Rolex automatic movements.

The Ref. 6605, powered by this caliber, therefore stands as one of the historically important models that established the fundamental architecture of the Datejust as it continues today.

The dial of the present watch features an exceptionally distinctive raised “ROLEX” signature of the type seen on selected examples from the mid- to late 1950s.

Clearly different from a conventional printed logo, its three-dimensional construction creates a commanding presence above the dial surface. At the same time, the black gloss dial has evolved through the decades from a deep ink-black tone into a complex palette carrying subtle brown undertones.

The printed elements have faded almost seamlessly into the surface, while the word “DATEJUST” reveals itself only faintly, depending on the angle of the light.

It is not simply disappearing.

Through the passage of time, it has changed the very manner in which it exists.
