ROLEX 14K Oyster perpetual 1955s

While legendary models such as the Submariner Ref. 6538 and the Turn-O-Graph also utilized derivatives of the 1030, one cannot truly speak of the Oyster Perpetual without discussing the 6500 series—the so-called 6500 family.

The date models, Ref. 6534 and 6535, are particularly admired for their understated yet deeply compelling presence. Within this family, the non-date model is undeniably Ref. 6564.

Introduced in 1950, the 6564 showcased Rolex’s creative dial experimentation. Cloisonné dials were produced, and unique hour markers—including star-shaped indexes—were employed, making these pieces especially collectible.

The present example features extraordinarily rare wedge-shaped hour markers with triangular tops—among the rarest configurations within the wedge category.

The case is solid 14k rose gold. The luminous minute dots still exhibit radium reaction, confirming a 100% original, untouched condition from the period. In every respect, this is an exceptionally rare piece.

Today, finding an example with these wedge markers anywhere in the global market is virtually impossible. For the individual fortunate enough to acquire this piece, it would represent not merely a purchase—but a triumph.

HISTORY
Since 1932, the world of timepieces entered a new era with the advent of automatic winding. It was Rolex that truly established this field. By the 1940s, movement size numbers began to be engraved on these automatic calibers—starting with the 620NA, progressing to the 630NA, the final evolution of the Bubbleback series.

In 1950, further developments arrived with the size “A260” / Caliber 645, followed by the “A296” / Caliber 745—often referred to as the Semi-Bubbleback. That same year also marked a major technical breakthrough: the transition from a unidirectional winding system, which wound the mainspring only when rotating in one direction, to a newly developed bidirectional winding system.

Soon after, what can fairly be called the foundation of modern Rolex movements was introduced—Caliber 1030.

Why the so-called Semi-Bubbleback calibers 645 and 745 remained in production until around 1955, despite the existence of the 1030, remains uncertain. Beneath their dust covers, however, the 645 and 745 featured refined finishing, eight-position adjustment, and swan-neck regulators—hallmarks of advanced watchmaking. It is possible that Rolex was not immediately convinced to abandon these highly refined constructions, especially considering the transition from the Super Balance (with its rimmed balance wheel design to reduce air resistance) to the screw balance used in the 1030.

Ultimately, however, Rolex chose to evolve toward the more service-friendly and easily adjustable Caliber 1030.

Today, I would like to introduce a model that represents one of the purest expressions of this foundational 1030 lineage.
