The story
About this watch
This is a 14K white gold LeCoultre "Mystery Dial" from the 1960s. Two brilliant-cut diamonds of 0.05 carat show the hour and the minute, and as the name suggests, they seem to float in the open space of the dial.

There are no hands. Discs are fitted to the hour wheel and the centre wheel in their place, and the discs themselves turn to tell the time. The centre-wheel plate is finished in the same silver as the dial, and the minute disc is made of clear acrylic, so only the diamonds appear to move across the face.

The movement is LeCoultre's base Calibre 480. It was designed as a three-hand calibre with small seconds. Here the fourth-wheel arbor runs in a jewel only, which turns it into a two-hand movement suited to the mystery dial. The finishing is careful, with wide, fine bevelling (anglage) that gives every edge a smooth line. Shock protection is Kif Flex, a system known at the time for absorbing knocks from both the side and the top. It runs at 18,000 vph on 17 jewels, with a screw balance and a Breguet hairspring, an overcoil that helps the balance swing evenly. It is a fine calibre in every respect.

The case is solid 14K white gold. There is no middle case: it is built in two pieces, front and back, which leaves fewer paths for moisture to get in. The case has never been polished. There are small scratches, but no dents or noticeable marks, and no polishing marks at all. It remains in its original state.
The dial is just as notable. On most mystery dials found on the market today, the top of each diamond setting has been lost and the stones sit directly on the plate. On this one the settings are complete, and there is no sign of refinishing, which places it in the best original condition.
For anyone who wants to own this mechanism exactly as it was made, this is a watch well worth having on the wrist.
