About this watch

The watch presented here is a Jaeger-LeCoultre in solid 18-carat pink gold from the 1950s, sold on the French market. The bezel is cut in the "Clous de Paris" guilloché pattern, and inside is the hand-wound Caliber 478.

The story starts with the movement. In 1940 LeCoultre put its work on precision into two chronometer-grade calibers, the 449 with small seconds and the 450 with centre seconds. In 1945 the 450's design was carried forward into the Caliber 478, which went on to power the Geophysic, the anti-magnetic chronometer Jaeger-LeCoultre built for professional use. The same line of development also led toward Vacheron Constantin's celebrated Caliber 453. The 478 is 28.8mm across and about 4mm thick. It has a swan-neck regulator, which allows fine adjustment of the rate and reduces backlash, gold chatons holding the jewels, and a gold retaining spring of distinctive shape at the tip of the balance cock. Every part is shaped like a small piece of sculpture.
What sets this piece apart is its case. It was made in France in solid 18-carat pink gold, and even given the close ties between Cartier, Jaeger and LeCoultre, a French case like this is out of the ordinary. It carries the French eagle-head hallmark for 18-carat gold and the maker's mark, and the dial reads "FABRIQUE EN SUISSE", with the movement marked as Swiss-made as well. The reason is a French rule of 3 August 1924. Watches and watch parts bearing the trademark of a foreign maker with a sales branch in France could not be imported unless the country of origin was marked next to the trademark. Put simply, a French-market watch of this period without these marks is very often not genuine. Today, as with vintage Cartier, solid gold watches in French cases are very scarce and tend to command high prices.
The rule was meant to protect French watchmaking and to raise the quality of watches made in France, and it has deep roots. During the French Wars of Religion, from 1562 to 1598, Calvinists known as Huguenots fled Catholic persecution, and cities such as Geneva took them in. Watchmakers and silversmiths among them settled there, and they became the foundation of the Swiss watch industry we know today. The LeCoultre family itself is said to descend from Pierre LeCoultre, who left France and settled in the region in 1559. The 1924 rule grew out of that history and out of French pride in it, and also out of the aftermath of the First World War, when France raised duties on gold and watches in particular.
Above all, the Clous de Paris pattern on the 18-carat gold bezel catches the light in a way that stays in the memory. The caliber behind the Geophysic, a French-market case in solid pink gold, and the history written into its markings make this a watch with a story far beyond the ordinary, for a collector who wants to own all three.
